The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) team at Jefferson Community Health and Life – Gardenside LTC, in Fairbury, Nebraska, implemented Natural Awakening to improve the overall sleep hygiene, health, and safety of their residents, while promoting a more “home-like” environment. During this WebEx presentation, they will share the steps taken, lessons learned and challenges they have faced through their journey of Natural Awakening.

Audience

Nursing home staff.

Note: To enhance understanding of sleep hygiene in preparation to attend the July 18, 2017 Natural Awakening webinar, it is recommended participants view the June 6, 2017, “Sleep Hygiene/Falls – Part II: Restorative Sleep Vitality Program” webinar presented by  Sue Ann Guildermann, RN, BA, MA, Director of Education with Empira.  This presentation discussed how a good night of undisturbed sleep is one of the most important services we can give our residents. By eliminating or minimizing night-time interruptions, we can encourage more of the restorative sleep our residents need to maintain and enhance their quality of life. The presentation also provided practical strategies to prevent falls through uninterrupted sleep. Watch the recording now and/or review the presentation here.

Objectives

Upon completion of the WebEx, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize health and safety concerns related to fragmented sleep pattern.
  2. Identify the top disturbances of sleep.
  3. Identify barriers to implementing Natural Awakening in their facility.
  4. Describe steps to implement a successful Natural Awakening Program promoting uninterrupted sleep.

Speakers

Debra Sutton, RN, BS, NHA, has been a nurse for 34 years and a director of nursing in long-term care for 18. Three years ago, she obtained her nursing home administrator’s license and has been in the role of administrator since that time at Gardenside LTC in Fairbury, NE. Deb and her staff have worked to promote resident-centered care at Gardenside and, to that end, they began the Natural Waking Program.

Samantha Wurm, LPN, began employment at Gardenside LTC as a CNA in 2014. She became a licensed practical nurse in 2016 and assumed her role as charge nurse. She worked closely with the QAA leader on different projects for Gardenside LTC, then took over as QAA leader in in the fall of 2016.
