Tobacco has a dual role among many American Indian tribal people. It is first a spiritual connection and a medicine still used today; it also is a harmful, addictive substance. Of course, this dual role can make it difficult to address commercial tobacco addiction among the Native population successfully. In this presentation, you will learn about promising approaches for community driven solutions and tools for health care providers to address tobacco addiction among American Indian patients.

Audience

Health care and social service professionals interested in promoting tobacco cessation.

Objectives

  • Understand traditional tobacco teachings and use.
  • Share prevalence rates for American Indian commercial tobacco addiction.
  • Learn promising approaches for community-driven solutions
  • Share examples of resources for improved cessation

Speakers

Kristine Rhodes, MPH, American Indian Cancer Foundation. Kris’s professional work has focused on improving the health of American Indian health communities – always with a community-led focus. She is a nationally recognized expert in American Indian tobacco control with more than two decades experience. She has developed tribal and urban health programs – resources with a strong focus on evaluation and research  to develop an evidence base for what works in Native communities. She is currently the CEO of the American Indian Cancer Foundation, a national organization dedicated to eliminating cancer burdens for American Indians. In this role, she has developed the organization from the ground up to create the necessary capacity to address a broad spectrum of cancer issues among tribal communities. Kris (enrolled Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and descendent of Fond du Lac Chippewa) earned a masters of public health degree in Public Health Administration and Policy and a bachelor of science degree in Community Health Education, both from the University of Minnesota.
