While the focus on the prescription drug abuse epidemic is on younger adults, addressing the needs of older adults is also a key component of community response to the opioid epidemic. This presentation will provide an overview of the impact of the opioid epidemic on the older adult, information about identifying signs and symptoms of prescription misuse among older adults, and strategies for prevention.

This presentation is directed to all health care providers concerned with the opioid epidemic.

Speaker
Katie Wendel, MSW
Katie has worked in the aging network for almost four years and is the Advocacy Specialist at the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, which provides services to seniors in six southeastern Michigan counties. In this role Katie monitors legislation, coordinates grassroots advocacy efforts and works with elected officials regarding issues of concern to older adults. Katie’s interest in Substance Abuse began during her internship at the New York City Department of Health, Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention, Care and Treatment. Katie has a Masters degree in Social Work from Columbia University.
