Long term care experts will describe how antibiotics work and their risks and benefits. Then they will define antibiotic resistance and identify strategies to decrease the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. This is the first of four sessions in Learning Session 4 for nursing home staff. To prepare for session 1, watch the 15-minute video: Exploring Antibiotics and review the resource: What You Need to Know About Antibiotics in a Nursing Home.

Objectives­

  • Describe how antibiotics work.
  • Identify the risks and benefits of antibiotic use.
  • Describe what is meant by antibiotic resistance.
  • Identify strategies to decrease the development and spread of antibiotic resistance.

Speakers

Kathie Nichols, BSN, RN, CRNN, nursing home liaison, Stratis Health. Kathie provides leadership for quality improvement and resident safety initiatives in Minnesota nursing homes as part of the Lake Superior Quality Innovation Network under direction of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Through this work, Kathie helps identify evidence-based best practices in health care processes and systems and works with nursing home staff to adapt and adopt these practices to improve quality of life and quality of care for persons living in the nursing home. Kathie was part of CMS’s QAPI national demonstration project and provided technical assistance to participating nursing homes as they integrated QAPI into their organizations. Kathie has extensive experience in acute and long term care including 20 years of as a director of nursing. She is a certified rehabilitation registered nurse and has used rehabilitation principles in supporting persons across the continuum of care. She is a current member and past board member of the Minnesota chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.

Kristi Wergin, RN, BSN, CPHQ, is a program manager with Stratis Health. Kristi has 30+ years experience as a registered nurse with specific background in eldercare, quality improvement, leadership, management, and customer/employee satisfaction. Currently she is leading the Lake Superior Quality Innovation Network Quality Improvement Organization nursing home team. This team is assisting MN, MI, and WI nursing homes in their quality improvement efforts as part of the CMS National Nursing Home Quality Care Collaborative (NNHQCC). Kristi leads the Minnesota Partnership to Improve Dementia Care.
