The Importance of Physician Leadership
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common hospital-acquired infections; 70%–80% of these infections are attributable to an indwelling urethral catheter. Morbidity attributable to any single episode of catheterization is limited, but the high frequency of catheter use in hospitalized patients means the cumulative burden of CAUTI is substantial. Dr. Shaik and Breanne, the Minnesota Lead ICU intensivist and ICU RN for the ON the CUSP: Stop CAUTI ICU project, have been working together to successfully promote CAUTI reduction at United Hospital, an Allina Health hospital. As they share their story, critical CAUTI reduction strategies will be provided.
