According to the CDC Antibiotic-resistant germs cause more than 2 million illnesses and at least 23,000 deaths each year in the US and preventing infections and improving antibiotic prescribing could save 37,000 lives from drug-resistant infections over 5 years. The CDC is committed to making healthcare safer and stopping the spread of antibiotic resistance.

Objectives

  • Describe the core elements of hospital antibiotic stewardship programs
  • Describe some options for measuring and assessing antibiotic use
  • Describe the importance of addressing antibiotic resistance across the continuum of care
